Be the Sunshine


 These last few years have been challenging, covid, tension between countries, wars, ugly politics--how are you doing? 

Have you checked in with yourself lately, are you managing your self-care? Because, when life grows uneasy and our corner of the universe begins to feel unsettled, it's normal for anger to settle in. It sets up shop like a new resident, redecorating and claiming unwanted mental space.

I feel it too, that inner voice (whom I nicknamed Beelzebub) trying to influence my moods and actions, which affects others around me.

So I ask, again, what are you doing to manage your self-care? Because as human beings, it's our job to help one another, to share and give to each other. And if we are taking in too much negativity, we cannot be effective humans. We cannot help another. Little acts of good, small deeds of kindness drift way. 

A simple smile or hello to a stranger can make someone's day. Holding that elevator door, the little things that inspire friendly human encounters can make us happy. 

And it's more important now, than ever before, to give a little and pay attention to those around us. But we cannot manage this if we too are in a dark place! So again, I ask, what are you doing to nourish your mind and soul? 

Take a moment, or two, each day to check in with yourself. I medicate early in the morning, getting up 30 minutes before the alarm goes off in our house. I go outside and feed the birds, alone. It's my time. Then, from our living room, I sit and watch the tiniest creatures enjoying the nourishment I just gave them. Often, I pray and work out where I want my day to go. Then TL gets up, and I enjoy tending to her morning needs, bringing her a hot cup of joe, before she leaves and I hit the office.

Now, if I can manage this routine a few more times during the day, all the better. But I must have at least this one block of 30-minutes. If I don't, my day will just struggle along. And because I'm now out of my routine, I will feel unsettled and moody. This is my time to check in with Dan. It helps me be a better, more giving, human!

It just does! 

So, friends, if you don't schedule personal time in your day--maybe it's your prayer or meditation time, yoga time, whatever--take my advice, and set up a block just for you! Get up earlier than your kids or spouse, and make it happen!

I always say, "If you can't see the sunshine, be the sunshine." BAM!!! There it is.
